Batch Convert Sd2 Files To Wav
SD2 to WAV Converter Yesterday I received a bunch of SD2 files, and had nothing to open them with. I don't have Pro Tools and SONAR can't import them. Neither can Adobe Audition, Audacity or Wavosaur. But I found a solution that was free and easy so I thought I'd pass it on to the community. The tool I found is called sdTwoWav, and it can be downloaded. Cropping Software For Android on this page. It's not a general-purpose file conversion program.
It just does one thing: it converts SD2 files to WAV, simply, quickly and conveniently. It can do batch-conversions, which made the conversion of 14 files very painless. And it's free, which happens to be right in my price range! Some notes on using sdTwoWav: 1. My files had originally come off a Mac, which stores audio data in reverse byte order compared to Windows. Fortunately, the tool has an option to flip the byte order, which you must do if converting Mac files, but not if they were created on a Windows machine. Output files have a.WAV extension but are actually broadcast waves.
That means that if you're importing a sequenced album or multitrack project into SONAR, you'll want to check the 'import broadcast waves at their timestamp' option (Options ->Global ->Audio Data). Sample rate, bit depth and interleave are not written into the file header in SD2 files like they are in RIFF Wav files, so you must know this information in advance of converting the files. The first time I converted a file, it played back too slowly, as if the sample rate were incorrect. Turned out I had neglected to tell the converter that it was a stereo file (it defaults to mono). If you are converting mixed-rate or mixed stereo and mono files, you must gather like files and convert them as separate batches. If anybody's going to be sending you SD2 files to mix, make sure you also get a track list that gives the sample rate, bit depth and interleave of each file. Sample rate, bit depth and interleave are not written into the file header in SD2 files like they are in RIFF Wav files, so you must know this information in advance of converting the files.
This info is kept in the Mac's file system's resource fork. If you copy those files from a Mac to a file system that doesn't support Mac resource forks (like fat32 or a samba network share), then the resource fork is copied to a separate file with the same name as the original but beginning with a leading period. You can then point Sonar to the SD2 file on that file system and Sonar will actually open it. Adobe Audition can also open the files without the resource fork.
